MARCH 3RD – DEVIL ON THE ROOFTOP (SYDNEY)

doubleviolin

Devil on the Rooftop is a new project formed by Jess Randall (The Crooked Fiddle Band) with an all-star cast of seasoned performers, ready to swoop, soar and slide around corners on one wheel, in a fantastical realm between hard-driving Bluegrass and Eastern European ’Gypsy violin’ traditions. They combine heart-stopping suspense, jaw-dropping fluidity, mind-bending rhythms, tear-jerking passion and a slightly odd sense of humour.

MARCH 11TH – CONCERT SERIES: EXTRAORDINARY DOUBLE BILL ROSS DALY (CRETE) & VILLA NAVIO (PORTUGAL)

screen-shot-2017-02-09-at-12-46-45-pm

Ross Daly, an Irish musician who lives in Crete, encompasses in his singular musical language all the musical traditions of the East, from India, through Persia to Turkey and Greece, and focuses on the Cretan lyra (including a custom built version of it), an instrument that is a close relative of the kemence. He leads a trio comprising fellow Cretan lyra player Kelly Thoma and Australian multi instrumentalist Paddy Montgomery. The three musicians forms an immediate intimacy, and each gesture sparks a supportive answer from the others. Daly’s playing resonates with many distant and ancient overtones, but all melts now into his unifying language.

Many years before what we call “World Music” appeared on the scene, certain individuals had already understood the enormous value and vast variety of the world’s various musical traditions and had dedicated their lives to their study. One such person is Ross Daly.Although of Irish descent, Ross Daly does not really fit into any particular ethnic stereotype given that his life has been spend in many different parts of the world and his home for the last 35 years is the island of Crete in Greece.

The band: Ross Daly – Lyra, Rabab, Kelly Thoma – Lyra, kemence, Paddy Montgomery – Oud, bouzouki, baglama, lyra

VILA NAVIO, name of the artistic work of André Coelho Rodrigues, presents the second album of original songs “Ancoradouro”, published in March 2016. This album was referenced and praised by the British World Music publication “Songlines Magazine”, a review that pointed out and mentioned that “Vila Navio has originality in mind, and their quest for a different sound has been a successfull one”.Musically, this project is defined by an assumed suggestion for the modernization of the Portuguese traditional music, involving elements of popular music with modern sonorities linked to contemporary jazz and the presence of samples generated electronically. As it is referenced by the British press, Vila Navio are “Portuguese traditionalists unafraid of mixing it up”.

“Vila Navio’s music has originality in mind and their quest for a different sound has been a successful one.” Songlines Magazine

MARCH 24TH – THE EAST POINTERS (CANADA)the-east-pointers-2016_lo

AFTER THEIR SOLD OUT SHOW IN APRIL INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED FOLK ENSEMBLE THE EAST POINTERS (CANADA) return to THE CHURCH OF GROOVE on FRIDAY MARCH 24TH TIX ON SALE NOW!! www.trybooking.com/OFCO

Ontario guitarist Jake Charron and 7th generation Prince Edward Island musicians Tim (fiddle) and Koady Chaisson (banjo) make traditional music seem ridiculously hip. An adrenalized, roof-rattling, performance monster, the trio’s excellent debut release ‘Secret Victory’, penned mostly in Australia in early 2015, features the beautiful original and traditional songs, free-wheeling, feisty instrumental jigs, stomps and reels and heart-breaking harmonies have made them torchbearers for a new wave in traditional music. On their fourth tour to Australia in two years, the band are hitting WOMADelaide and then venues and clubs all over the East Coast for seven glorious weeks with old favourites and sneaking in some new tunes and songs that they’ve been prepping for their new album, due out late 2017.

‘The talent is flat-out-knock-you-on-your-ass calibre, and the chemistry between these players is as good as it gets. So fine and so instinctive is their playing that you’d swear they’d been playing together for 20 years.’ The Guardian (CAN)

“The East Pointers, a three-piece jigs-and-reels band from Canada, have this way of over-revving their engine to implosion point and then, just before the musical catastrophe eventuates, they re-lease the handbrake and their machine screams off with heart-stopping momentum. You see it as much as hear it, because at that exhilarating moment when banked-up pressure converts into raw artistic energy,” (The Australian, January 2015) www.eastpointers.ca
