FEBRUARY 2ND – MEDITERRANEAN SUPER GROUP *ETNIKA (MALTA) with support by Damian Wright (flamenco guitar)low_etnika-band-shot

Some 15 years ago a small but enthusiastic group of friends on the Mediterranean island of Malta succeeded in achieving the unachievable: to almost singlehandedly revive the lost Maltese roots music genre.

TIX AVAILABLE NOW!! through: www.trybooking.com/OETT

“…the band who are single-handedly spearheading the renaissance in Maltese roots music” – Jon Lusk (Roots magazine)

Etnika followed a trail of fascinating archival and field research, unearthing and rescuing long forgotten instruments, exotic melodies and genres from the verge of extinction. The hardest work however was to infuse new life into these dusty treasures, to reinvent a fresh sound and provide a relevant contestant within the contemporary context.

They toured extensively representing Malta, and performed internationally in over 15 countries and prestigious venues of Europe and North Africa, including the Montreux Jazz festival. Their energetic and oddball style eventually provided a blueprint for a multitude of offshoot projects.

Oud and biambo (jew’s harp), Maltese flute and flamenco footwork, double bass and Maltese lullabies. The enchanting melancholy echoes over complex rhythms, old Maltese instruments find their way into the sizzling current soundscape on a fascinating musical journey of Malta and the Mediterranean. Expect a few detours, expect the unexpected, this port-cabaret band has a big heart.

“…the undisputed keepers of the flame” – Kevin Drake (Malta Now)
“…some of the most interesting and challenging music you are likely to hear on this earth-like world” – Jim Foley (Rootsworld.com)

FEBRUARY 17TH & 18TH – THE HOT POTATO BAND (SYDNEY) PERFORM FOR 2 NIGHTS!!

13735095_609305302576097_4574902856318314797_o

After a massively sucessful show earlier this year The Hot Potato Band return for 2 nights!! Prepare to have an incredibly fun night of dance and goodtimes.

TICKETS AVAILABLE NOW!

The Hot Potato Band found their roots and musical inspiration in Sydney’s southern suburbs as street performers running over 120 shows a year all around Australia. An incredible performance at Festival Of The Sun 2013 opened the doors to new ideas and opportunities which were further realised after the perfect collaboration with Dylan Wright in 2014.
Anything could happen! Known to cause a severe case of happy fever the 11 piece, fresh sounds brass band is sure to put a smile on your face in an incredibly unique live show. After returning from their acclaimed performances at Woodford Folk Festival 2015, the Hot Potato Band have become one of the most celebrated performing bands in Australia both on and off the stage. Beware, as they make you the centre of their performance… literally!
The bands unique sound comes from the absence of a single drum kit, bass guitar and electrified instruments. Three drummers create synchronised grooves on what would be a deconstructed drum kit. The bass lines are covered by an enormous, lung busting Sousaphone. Two baritone saxophones mimic the part of a rhythm guitar and the bands huge array of horns cover catchy chorus lines and provide a beautiful harmonic cloud for Dylan (the vocalist) to float above.

doubleviolin

Devil on the Rooftop is a new project formed by Jess Randall (The Crooked Fiddle Band) with an all-star cast of seasoned performers, ready to swoop, soar and slide around corners on one wheel, in a fantastical realm between hard-driving Bluegrass and Eastern European ’Gypsy violin’ traditions. MARCH 23RD – THE EAST POINTERS (CANADA)the-east-pointers-2016_lo

AFTER THEIR SOLD OUT SHOW IN APRIL INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED FOLK ENSEMBLE THE EAST POINTERS (CANADA) return to THE CHURCH OF GROOVE on THURSDAY MARCH 23RD TIX ON SALE NOW!! www.trybooking.com/OFCO

Ontario guitarist Jake Charron and 7th generation Prince Edward Island musicians Tim (fiddle) and Koady Chaisson (banjo) make traditional music seem ridiculously hip. An adrenalized, roof-rattling, performance monster, the trio’s excellent debut release ‘Secret Victory’, penned mostly in Australia in early 2015, features the beautiful original and traditional songs, free-wheeling, feisty instrumental jigs, stomps and reels and heart-breaking harmonies have made them torchbearers for a new wave in traditional music. On their fourth tour to Australia in two years, the band are hitting WOMADelaide and then venues and clubs all over the East Coast for seven glorious weeks with old favourites and sneaking in some new tunes and songs that they’ve been prepping for their new album, due out late 2017.

‘The talent is flat-out-knock-you-on-your-ass calibre, and the chemistry between these players is as good as it gets. So fine and so instinctive is their playing that you’d swear they’d been playing together for 20 years.’ The Guardian (CAN)

“The East Pointers, a three-piece jigs-and-reels band from Canada, have this way of over-revving their engine to implosion point and then, just before the musical catastrophe eventuates, they re-lease the handbrake and their machine screams off with heart-stopping momentum. You see it as much as hear it, because at that exhilarating moment when banked-up pressure converts into raw artistic energy,” (The Australian, January 2015) www.eastpointers.ca
